BROADWAY EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS
MANHATTAN, NY

Client:

New York City School Construction Authority

Four floors of the Standard Oil Building, a designated New York City landmark in lower Manhattan, are now part of the NYC public school system.  Two schools occupying two floors each comprise the Broadway Educational Campus and provide much needed classroom seats to the growing residential occupancy of this densely built neighborhood.

Classrooms for both schools are assembled along the sweeping curve of the Broadway façade capitalizing on the views and light once enjoyed by the titans of industry.  New convenience stairs connecting the four school floors help to reduce the need for elevators between classes and contribute to the successful incorporation of a public school in a building historically leased for office use.

As the first Leased Space school in an existing office building to come under New York City’s sustainable building mandate it sets the standards for the on-going development of the NYC Green Schools Guide.
