P.S. 81 ANNEX
QUEENS, NY

Client:

New York City School Construction Authority

Awards:

Queens Chamber of Commerce – Excellence in Design 2014

This complete exterior renovation of a New York City public primary school annex preserves the character of the historically eligible building and saves an example of Colonial Revival civic architecture in Queens County, New York.  The site is adjacent to, but not within, the Ridgewood Historic District.  The Annex has been deemed eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic places by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Due to water infiltration and brick deterioration, the NYC SCA moved forward with an exterior masonry repair and flood elimination project in 2010.  Ciardullo Architecture & Eng was brought on as consultant to complete the design.  The extent of water damage, combined with the accumulation of coatings from years of over painting, made it necessary to replace a significant portion of the exterior brick.  This provided an opportunity to restore the building to its original state, in a combination of brick repair and replacement.  These details once hidden by paint and metal were uncovered and rejuvenated during the process.
